What Is Reiki? Understanding the Ancient Practice of Energy Healing
If you've ever wondered what Reiki is or how it works, you're not alone. Reiki is a gentle wellness practice that supports relaxation, balance, and overall well-being by working with the body's natural energy systems. It is an ancient form of healing that is practiced by various practitioners and masters around the world.
At Spine to Soul, Reiki is offered as a wellness service that can be experienced on its own or alongside Pilates and other holistic wellness practices.
What Does Reiki Mean?
The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words:
Rei – often translated as "universal" or "spiritually guided"
Ki – meaning life force energy
Simply put, it is a universal energy that exists in all living things. It allows us healing abilities that help improve the quality of our lives. The Japanese call it Ki, the Chinese call it Chi, other Asian cultures refer to it as Prana and the western world often refers to it as the Holy Spirit.
Other disciplines that work with this universal energy that lives within us like Tai Chi, Feng Shui, Meditation, Yoga, Acupuncture and as I firmly believe with my experience, Pilates should be added to the list.
Using these practices, one can control and enhance the flow of this life energy throughout the body as well as around it. Every one of us embodies this energy and we often use it without realizing.
Picture a time when you maybe hurt something, our instinct is to use our hands to touch it. When a child falls and gets a bump, the mother’s hand on top of it to soothe the child is using that energy. We can use this energy to heal ourselves as well as others.
How Does Reiki Work?
Reiki is a healing energy method that uses hands-on healing. Oftentimes the hands are not physically touching the body but may at times lightly help move energy throughout the body that may be stuck or needs balancing.
It is a holistic method that involves activating one’s own ability to heal themselves. It can help relieve physical or emotional pain as well as stress, anxiety and inflammation resulting in prevention of future illness and disease. When the mind, body and spirit are in harmony, our body will naturally heal itself and function optimally.
There are seven main energy centers of the body known as the chakras. Each one supplies energy to a different area of the body, when they are blocked or clogged the body can succumb to sickness and the energy flow is greatly reduced. Reiki helps to open those and balance the flow of these areas.
What Happens During a Reiki Session?
The practitioner usually scans the clients body and is guided to where they need to focus. Reiki is channeled through the hands and when placed on oneself or another person for the intention of healing, you connect with the universal life force.
Reiki brings balance and healing wherever it is needed. The best way to fully understand its benefits and how it works is to experience it yourself.
The goal is not to "fix" or force healing, but rather to create an environment where the body and mind can rest, restore, and return to a more balanced state.
Many people describe Reiki sessions as calming, grounding, and deeply restorative.
What Are the Benefits of Reiki?
While Reiki is not intended to diagnose, treat, or cure medical conditions, many people seek Reiki to support:
Stress reduction
Relaxation
Emotional well-being
Mental clarity
Nervous system regulation
Improved sense of balance and connection
Many clients find that Reiki complements other wellness practices such as Pilates, yoga, meditation, breathwork, and mindfulness.
Reiki and Whole-Body Wellness
At Spine to Soul, we believe healing extends beyond the physical body. Just as Pilates helps us build strength, mobility, and body awareness, Reiki encourages us to slow down, reconnect, and create space for restoration.
Whether experienced on its own or as part of a personalized wellness plan, Reiki can be a valuable tool for supporting your overall well-being.
